Street Racing has been a problem in LA for decades, and it shows no sign of abating anytime soon.  According to a Fox News report, around 160 people die each year in the U.S. street racing related accidents. For each state, California leads the way with around 40 with Texas not too far behind with 33.

The Los Angelas metro area is considered the mecca of street racing with some unsanctioned events bringing in racers from all over the world.  This type of fight-club style racing is popularized in movies and songs and has been a staple of American culture since the invention of the automobile.

The problem is, these races can be deadly, and many times it’s not the racers or even their entourage that become victims, but completely innocent people who happened to be in the wrong place.

Street Racing Kills Woman Walking in Crosswalk

A female pedestrian crossing a Long Beach street with a green light was tragically killed on Monday, May 11, 2020, when she was struck by a car involved in an illegal street race. Police say that the accident happened when a Lexus Sedan was racing another car down Santa Fe Avenue and ran a red light hitting a minivan.

The Lexus then spun around and hit the pedestrian in the crosswalk. First responders found her on the street unconscious. She was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the Lexus was critically injured and taken to the hospital, and the driver of the minivan had minor injuries.  Police are still looking for the other car that was racing the Lexus, but do not have a description of the car or the driver.

Street Racing Accidents and Injuries

Street racing is certainly dangerous for those behind the wheel, but the odds are that spectators or someone uninvolved will be injured or killed before the driver csars involved. In 2008, 8 spectators died watching an illegal street race on a suburban road in Maryland. First responders said it was one of the worst crash scenes he’d ever seen.

Most of those injured in a street race are pedestrians and are hit at a high speed. This causes certain types of serious injuries that can, and often does, lead to death.

If you’ve been injured in a street racing accident because of someone else’s’ negligence, you need to talk to an attorney about your injuries. The insurance company will try to find a way to blame you or someone else for your injuries. They might wrongly tell you that if you were there to watch the race, then you accepted the risks and can’t collect anything for your injuries. Talk to someone who can tell you the truth before you talk to anyone from the insurance company.
