A bus taking 21 passengers from Los Angeles to San Ysidro Saturday around 10:20 p.m. According to the California Highway Patrol, the bus left the roadway and rolled over a few times before coming to rest down an embankment on its roof.
Authorities say three female passengers died at the scene and 18 others injured with all but a few being taken to local hospitals. Several passengers were ejected from the bus and others had to be pulled or cut out of the wreckage.
Police are unsure if the weather played a role in the crash. The driver of the bus, who was only slightly injured, was given a blood test as part of a standard procedure, however, the CHP says that neither drugs nor alcohol were believed to be a factor in the crash.
Charter Bus Accidents and Injuries
In most crashes, those inside the bus are relatively protected. The bus is heavy, and it’s occupants are surrounded by metal and heavy plastic that will help absorb the impact. However, when a bus rolls, then those protective walls become sources of injury for the passengers as they are tossed around inside.
Sometimes occupants are ejected from the bus, and other times they are trapped inside and have to be cut out. There are certain common injuries that happen in a bus versus a passenger car crash, and some of them are:
- Blunt Force Trauma
- Traumatic Brain Injuries
- Broken Arms/Legs
- Fractured/Displaced Ribs
- Fractured Facial Bones
- Wrist Fractures
- Internal Injuries/Bleeding
- Hip Injuries
- Heart Attacks
- PTSD and other Mental Anguish
- Airbag injuries
Charter Bus Liability
In all personal injury cases, the driver that was negligent is required by California law to pay for all injuries and financial losses of the victims of an accident. Sometimes the bus company has some, or all, liability, and then the victims will have to seek compensation for their injuries from the charter bus company.
In most cases, this is done in the same way as a victim would if the driver of another car was liable. They would make a claim for all their injuries and financial losses stemming from the accident against the company or their insurance company.
If the claim is rejected or if the company doesn’t offer a fair settlement, then the victims will have to file a lawsuit against the company.
