A speeding car is a deadly weapon, and the faster the car, the more deadly. In a study by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, researchers found that for every five mph increase in a road’s speed limit, fatalities rose 8.5 percent.

As long as humans are going to drive cars, accidents will happen; however, the speed of the vehicles involved can affect the risk of serious injury and death.

Three Dead after High-Speed Multi-Car Wreck in Watts

A speeding car rear-ended one car and then crossed over the center line and struck another, killing three people. It’s unclear at this time which car or cars the fatalities came from and whether the driver of the speeding car was one of the fatalities.

Police say that the accident happened at the intersection of Compton Blvd and Imperial Highway around 7:15 pm on Friday, May 1, 2020. No charges have been filed, and the accident is still under investigation.

Speeding Drivers and Injuries

Researchers from the European Commission on Mobility and Transport conducted a study and found that for every 1% increase in speed, there is a 2% change in the number of injury accidents, a 3% change in the severity of the injury and a 4% change in the fatality rate.

Simply put, this study shows that the higher the speed of the car at the moment of impact, the greater the risk of injury, the severity of the injury, and the risk of a fatality.
