Horse and Car Collisions

Each year, thousands of horses and cars collide injuring and killing riders and drivers alike. The most common accident happens when the horse is hit while walking on the shoulder of the road. In the second most common, the horse walks into the street in traffic. In the Lake View Terrace area, horse riding is common with many local families owing horses and stables.

Horse-Vehicle Collision Injuries

The National Center for Biotechnology Information reports that the most serious injuries to a rider is a head injury. When a rider and a car collide, the rider almost always falls from the horse and head injuries are common.

Some of the most common injuries to horse riders are:

  • Traumatic Brain Injury
  • Severe Concussion
  • Broken wrists
  • Broken arms
  • Fractured Ribs
  • Nerve Damage

Horse and Vehicle Liability

In some ways, an accident involving a horse and motor vehicle is not unlike a typical motor vehicle accident. The person that is negligent will have to pay for all injuries and damages. If the horses are hurt, then the owner of the horse can collect for the horses’ medical bills and all costs related to the incident including if the horses were killed. However, unlike a typical accident, horses are treated as the property of their owner who can only collect for finanical losses incurred by the loss or damage to the horse.

One of the differences is that the owners can’t recover for the pain and suffering of their horses, but they can recover for their own mental anguish of having their horses killed. Another difference is that horse owners can get their own insurance for their horses that will cover them for their losses if the horses are injured or killed. They can also get liability coverage in case their horses cause an accident and others are injured.
