Avoiding Truck Accidents in Los Angeles

This week there was a terrible, fiery, deadly wreck on Interstate 5 in Los Angeles. According to ABC News, it took about 7 hours for the Freeway to be completely back open again. In this particular wreck, it is believed that a box truck heading North on the 5 lost control and crossed over the divider and into Southbound traffic. A tanker truck exploded, sending black smoke into the air which could be seen for miles around the Griffith Park area.

Can you avoid big rig accidents?

While this is not your typical big rig accident, there are steps you can take to avoid being involved in an accident with a tractor trailer.

Assuming you drive a sedan such as a Honda Civic or other passenger vehicle around LA (or any other part of the world), some sage advice includes:

  • Beware of blind spots
  • Use your turn signals when passing the truck
  • Pulling over? Get off the road. If you’re involved in a fender bender our out of gas, get out of traffic.
  • Be careful passing. If you can’t see the truck’s side mirrors, the trucker can’t see you.

Driver and trucker negligence

Sometimes even if you are being a careful driver, the actions of another can cause an accident, injury, or death. Sometimes these collisions are unavoidable. Negligence comes from the driver of a truck, the trucking company, or both.

Trucking negligence may include but is not limited to:

  • Truck maintenance. This includes brake failure, wheel failure and tire problems.
  • Driving under the influence.
  • Speeding. Or traveling at a speed unsafe for the load or current road conditions.
  • Fatigue.
  • Unsafe loads.
